the free library program (biblivre) is an application that enables digital inclusion of citizens in the information society. it is a software for cataloging and dissemination of collections of public and private libraries of all sizes. in addition, anyone can share in the system their own texts, music, pictures and movies.
by using international library standards and enable communication network holdings, the system allows the user to access different libraries worldwide.
the system is licensed as general public license of the free software foundation (gplv3) and was developed by the society of friends of the national library (sabin), with support from coppe / ufrj., in developing the project in versions 1.0 and 2.0.
the project was initially sponsored by ibmbrazil and since 2007 its sole sponsor is itaú cultural institute. his version 3.0 has versions in english and spanish in addition to portuguese, to meet the growing demand for software use in institutions abroad.
today, biblivre's success in brazil as well as abroad and, in extreme cultural relevance, has established itself as the application of choice for the digital inclusion of citizens.
